My Father, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Future of Cancer Care

My Father, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Future of Cancer Care 1224 1632 Jamie Metzl

As you may know, I lost my beloved father, Kurt Metzl, in April 2025. I miss him deeply as I strive to honor his legacy.

In that spirit, please find here the just-released feature I have written for AARP The Magazine combining the story of my father, our successful battle to push back the cancer and treasure every moment together, and how Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs inspired us along the way. The feature also includes my “15 Point Cancer Battle Plan,” which I have written as an essential resource for anyone newly diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones. In our new age of precision medicine, patient education, engagement, and involvement at every level is more essential than ever.

As you may know, AARP The Magazine is the largest physical circulation magazine in the world, reaching 38 million households. If you don’t receive the magazine, I hope you are not wasting your precious youth (and please wear a bike helmet and don’t smoke!).

I ask that you please read the piece and share it with anyone you know, now and in the future, facing the terrifying diagnosis of cancer. Even at those darkest of moments, there is still hope. My father, who never stopped believing in life or that the Kansas City Chiefs were going to win the next Super Bowl, embodied that hope.
