My Korean Doppelgänger

My Korean Doppelgänger

My Korean Doppelgänger 1707 2560 Jamie Metzl

I hope you will watch this incredible short video of my Korean virtual doppelgänger speaking in my voice and with my mannerisms, presenting words I have written in English (I wish I did, but I don’t speak Korean) describing my new book, Superconvergence. This is not a deepfake but, instead, the product of my collaboration with an innovative new company, Hour One AI.

To make this video, I first visited the company’s studio where I spent an hour having my movements, facial expressions, and hand gestures mapped. Then I sent in an audio file of my voice. I worked with a Korean friend to ensure the Korean translation of my words captured the essence of what I was trying to say before entering that text into the Hour One program interface. The result is quite remarkable.

I anticipate Superconvergence will come out in many languages, but the Korean edition is confirmed and will be the first. I’ll be able to make versions of this video in other languages in minutes, once I have quality translations in those languages.

There is no doubt we have a lot to fear about the role AI systems might play in copyright violations, deepfakes, and other infringements and manipulations. I hope we will keep our minds open, however, to other more positive and creative uses.

For your background, I have included below the Korean and English versions of my words. The numbers reflect the different scenes in the video.

Hello. I am the digital avatar of Jamie Metzl.
After nearly four billion years of evolution, our species suddenly has the increasing ability to hack the source code of life, redirect evolution, and engineer new forms of intelligence. The possibilities are breathtaking… and so are the risks.

2
This issue is deeply personal to me, and I’ve spent the better part of three decades working to increase the odds we humans will use our new superpowers wisely.

3
The same technologies that can help us prevent future health problems before they emerge, engineer plants to feed billions more people using less land, water, and fertilizer, generate meat from the stem cells of healthy living animals, grow industrial raw materials instead of cutting them down or digging them up, and store data reliably for millions of years also have the potential—if we are not careful—of doing immeasurable harm.

4
Because the awesome powers of our overlapping AI, genetics, and biotechnology revolutions don’t come with their own built-in value systems, it’s up to us to ensure our most cherished values guide the application of our most powerful technologies. We must imagine the world we want to inhabit, then start building it step by step.

5
I’ve written Superconvergence to help us do exactly that. The book describes what’s happening, what’s at stake, and what we each and all can do to build a better future.

6
For better and worse, I live a lot of my mental life in the future—so the possibilities are very real to me. On the one hand, I envision a world where cancers are prevented and cured, farmers in the most climate-stressed parts of our planet grow abundant crops, areas of land larger than Canada are rewilded (saving countless animals from extinction), and whole buildings are grown from living cells, kind of like coral reefs—all thanks to our newfound abilities to manipulate and engineer life.

7
On the other hand, as a member of the World Health Organization Expert Advisory Committee on Human Genome Editing, I have seen the real dangers of runaway, unregulated science. Because neither the best- nor the worst-case scenarios are inevitable, my goal is to help move the dial in a positive direction. This book is the ultimate reflection of that mission.

8
This topic is also very personal to me on an even deeper level.
While I was writing Superconvergence, my father was diagnosed with advanced neuroendocrine cancer, the same type of cancer that afflicted Steve Jobs.

9
Working on a chapter on the future of healthcare, I found myself in the strange position of helping my father navigate the maze of cancer treatments being transformed by the technological revolutions I explore in the book. After standard chemotherapy didn’t achieve the hoped-for results, I encouraged our incredible oncologist to bet on a new, targeted agent genetic therapy that succeeded beyond our wildest expectations.

10
This progress made it possible, against the odds, for my father and mother to attend their granddaughter’s bat mitzvah a year after the initial diagnosis.
I recognize there are many reasons to fear the technologies described in this book, but we should never lose sight of the many miracles our new capabilities will make possible if we can dream and safely build together.

11
I invite you to read the book and join the conversation.

Thank you.
